Grand final behaviour penalised

THREE Mallee Eagles supporters have had a two year ban handed to them from the Central Rivers board that prevents them from attending any Central Murray and Golden Rivers league venues for the next two years.

The decision comes following investigation into their behaviour at the conclusion of the 2019 senior grand final match between Woorinen and Mallee Eagles.

Three supporters were found to have abused Woorinen players, AFL Central Murray officials and board members, using offensive and threatening language.

The Central Rivers Board determined they behaved in a way which disturbs the enjoyment of the match and brings discredit to their club and the league.

These supporters will also be unable to attend any AFL Central Murray Academy events.

The club has been held responsible for the behaviour and fined $4000, with an early guilty plea this will be reduced to $2000.

A player who abused the umpires after the match has also been given an eight week suspension which can be reduced to six weeks with an early guilty plea.

Central Rivers Board chairman John Brookshaw said the board was unimpressed by the disrespect shown to other patrons and opposition players.

"We don't want the actions of a minority to define their club or our leagues," Brookshaw said.

"We are giving these supporters the opportunity to become positive contributors to their club.

"They embarrassed their colleagues with their behaviour and spoiled what was an exciting game of football.

"We saw the best and the worst in sport.

"Several Mallee Eagles players, even though they lost a close encounter, hid their disappointment, and congratulated their opposition and behaved in a manner which exemplified the sportsmanship we normally expect."

The Central Rivers Board have stated the supporters' sanction can be reduced to 12 months if they volunteer to umpire either reserves or junior football each Saturday for 12 weeks.

The board has given the Mallee Eagles the option to appeal the decision to the independent tribunal if they think the sanctions provided are manifestly harsh or don't provide procedural fairness.

Brookshaw said the board has granted the club an extension to assess their options with any appeal to be lodged before 5pm today.
