Riverside tree uprooted

DAMAGING winds uprooted a large gum tree on the bank of the Murray River at Riverside Park on Sunday.

A Swan Hill Council spokesperson said the State Emergency Service went to the scene and council workers filled the hole left by the tree and ensured "that the levee integrity was not compromised in that area".

"Our crews have been there today to undertake clean-up efforts."

Witness Scott Bourne, who had just pulled into the nearby carpark, said no one was injured.

"There were two people eating at one of the benches," he said.

"We had just pulled up and there was a crack, then it came down."

The tree was believed to have been undermined by floodwaters and damaging winds.

The SES responded to 43 requests for assistance in the Loddon-Mallee region at the weekend, including 30 downed trees.

A severe weather warning for damaging winds remained current for much of Victoria yesterday, with the potential for gusts up to 110km/h.
