Ultima-te fundraising

FOR a small Mallee town, it has a big heart.

The Ultima Progress Association has raised almost $30,000 to pour back into the town.

President Sonia Cunning said during the past three years, the group had raised $27,000 through Bunnings sausage sizzles.

"Some of the money has gone towards the maintenance at the cafe (Ultima Rural Transaction Centre and Cafe) and some money was also devoted to the golf course club (Ultima Golf Club)," Ms Cunning said.

She said the kitchen at the club shut 12 months ago, later offering pizza every night, and meals one night per week. The club also hosts a darts weekend in May.

Ms Cunning said of the $27,000, about $6000 of costs went to the golf club to install a shower and re-do the bar, another $4000 covered the progress association's insurance costs.

She said the funds were also used to cover the cost of the town's Christmas barbecue and maintain the cafe building owned by the association.

Ms Cunning said for more than two years, the progress association had run a community garden located next to the shop.

She said vegetables grown in the garden were available for anyone to take for free from the shop.
