Acting Inspector Brad Bennett said the penalty was in response to increasing reports of theft from motor vehicle, with many left unlocked at the time of the theft.

While police have issued repeated warnings to drivers to ensure vehicles are locked and valuables are removed, Act-Insp Bennett said the message still wasn't getting through.
