DRUMMING up the courage to see the devastating effects of bushfires on her former workplace has been a "heart-wrenching" experience for Cheryle Chalmers.

The former Balranald and Robinvale resident and firefighter visited Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary on Kangaroo Island, which she described as an "emotional" experience.
