Corona Virus caring for others group

IF there was any time that people should be looking out for others, it's right now.

That's why Georgina Shean has set up the Swan Hill Share & Care Facebook page.

Through the group, during the COVID-19 pandemic group members are encouraged to swap or give away their items for free to help others out.

"I felt like we needed some kindness in a stressful time," Ms Shean said.

Ms Shean said the response to the Facebook group, which now has more than 1100 members, "went crazy overnight".

"We had so many demands to join, it was just unbelievable," she said.

"So much to the point that we've had to invite someone else to become admin."

Items being donated range from food, baby clothing, nappies, books and toiletries.

Ms Shean said group members were now being encouraged to only share and swap the "essentials".

"We've tried to encourage people to social isolate," she said.

"Making sure they're only picking up from doorsteps if they have to pick something up."

Ms Shean said it was important to help others during this time.

"Rather than just your (Facebook) news feed being full of COVID-19 crap," Ms Shean said.

"I know it's an important topic, but it can get depressing for people and a lot of people are suffering enough.

"They don't need to be surrounding themselves with things that make them depressed all the time."

On a more personal level, Ms Shean's family owns trucks, so their biggest issues has been purchasing parts from Italy.

She has also struggled to find what she needs in the supermarket.

"Even to the extent when I'm helping others, to put them in touch with the right service providers, has been hard," Ms Shean said.

Ms Shean said the Facebook group would not be shut down because she felt there was a demographic of people in the region who can't get help anywhere else.

"That's why we're asking people to only share things that are essential," Ms Shean said.

"I also think it's important for social connections to remain in a time where there's already people at risk, who are going to be placed under more pressure."people at risk, who are going to be" placed under more pressure."
