Culture blooms for Robinvale kids

CULTURAL kits have been a hit with Aboriginal kids in Robinvale.

Murray Valley Aboriginal Co-operative (MVAC) staff have delivered more than 80 kits over the past few weeks as a way to keep children engaged with their culture during isolation.

The kits included colouring-in sheets, paint and a set of clap sticks.

"It was really about giving the kids something to do during isolation, but at the same time it gave them an opportunity to have a connection to culture," MVAC support worker Daryl Singh said.

Mr Singh and fellow MVAC support worker Ivan Hingano created the clap sticks from scratch, including cutting, barking and sanding the wood.

They were included in the kits with small pots of paint so children could paint them with original designs.

Mr Singh said while the sticks provided a bit of fun for young members of the community, they were also a way to teach children about an important aspect of Aboriginal culture.

"When I delivered them, I'd say to the kids, 'What you are holding in your hands is one of the world's oldest musical instruments,' and when they realised these instruments belonged to Aboriginal culture, they were proud...
