Maintaining a family tradition

Music has always run in the family of 10-string Spanish classical guitarist Matthew Fagan.

His grandfather was celebrated concert pianist Milton Parkes and his great uncle Cecil Parkes was a child prodigy violinist who toured with Dame Nellie Melba.

To honour his musical heritage, Mr Fagan released an album in 2013 entitled Virtuoso: A Homage to my Ancestors, featuring compositions from classical masters Vivaldi and Mozart as well as Spanish Classical music.

Now, Mr Fagan is touring around the state with a special stop in Swan Hill this weekend.

The concert will be held tomorrow at the Swan Hill Regional Art Gallery.

Mr Fagan will be accompanied by Mildura-based pianist Isaac Mouskovias.

The gallery holds a special place in Mr Fagan’s heart who has performed there more than 10 times in his decade spanning career.

“The Swan Hill Art Gallery was actually where my first professional performance was held,” he said.

“It’s a place I love returning to. My father had relatives who lived in Swan Hill and along the Murray River.”
