Homicide detectives travelled to Swan Hill on Saturday and remained in town on Sunday, seeking answers to the tragic incident.

Initial reports from Victoria Police said emergency services responded to a brawl on Campbell Street at around 1.15am on Saturday morning.

Police media confirmed the 20-year-old was treated for a head injury by paramedics, but died at the scene.

Residents awoke to road blocks, with police cordoning off Campbell Street, between McCallum and Pritchard streets. The road remained closed until 5pm on Saturday, with businesses on that section of the street told not to open their doors for the day.

The victim's name has not yet been released, but it is clear from social media and scenes on the street that Swan Hill has been shocked and saddened by the loss.

Swan Hill police Inspector Haydn Downes told The Guardian the investigation was ongoing, and public assistance was being sought.
