Swan Hill College student Sam Smith will get the opportunity of a lifetime when he leaves for France this Saturday.

The 16-year-old Year 11 student was chosen for the sponsored Swan Hill Sunrise Rotary Club youth exchange program to spend one year studying overseas.

Sam is looking forward to the opportunity. He said the moment had creeped up on him “after months of anticipation”.

“All the nerves are gone. I’m just really excited to be going,” he said.

As part of the exchange, Sam will attend high school there and live with four host families.

He said he applied for the exchange purely for the experience.

“There’s nothing quite like this opportunity,” he said.

“I’ve been studying a little bit of French during the six months since I was chosen so I will be learning a lot from a cultural perspective when I get there.”
