A FORMER dairy industry representative has filled the remaining seat on Wakool Shire Council after winning the C Ward by-election.

Barham dairy farmer Alan Mathers defeated Christine Dartnell in the by-election, which was held last Saturday to fill the C Ward position vacated by Colin Membrey when he resigned last December.

Cr Mathers is the chairman of the Barham Land Care group and recently helped set up a ratepayers' association for Wakool Shire.

Cr Mathers has been a fairy farmer for more than 30 years and during this time has served as the state executive of New South Wales Dairy Farmers Association and as the inaugural director of the Dairy Farmers Milk Co-operative.

The incoming councillor told The Guardian he wanted to focus on building teamwork within the council as it "took on the challenge" of fighting the State Government's proposal to merge it with Murray Shire.
