Splatt downed

13 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
SPLATT went down to Campbell by a mere one game in the Swan Hill pennant tennis blockbuster of the day, and in the process, its hold on top place on the ladder was severely jeopardized.

The men's sets in this match finished with Campbell holding a one game advantage, although it only won five sets to Splatt's six.

However, some more competitive losses allowed the fifth side to cling to a chance to force its way into the top four.

John Wardle led from the front for Campbell with three wins for the day -- two strong doubles victories, and a hard-fought 8-7 in the singles where he overcame the experienced Barry Dow.

Max Carroll also won three for Campbell, and Julie Wardle, after a loss in her first set, managed to put two wins on the board.

Splatt did best in the bottom half of the roster, where Damien Mays, Bruce McDowall and Darryl Roberts all scored three wins.

Campbell can thank its women for a great effort to put together a seven game margin, winning four sets to two.

Angela Best and Melissa Snyder got the side away to a good start, with a landmark 8-7 win over Colleen Rundell-Gordon and Angela Smith.

Best backed up to win her second set with Melita Sartori, and Snyder and Sartori scored a close 8-6 victory.

Leonie Phelan and Caitlin Wright won the fourth set for Campbell.
