COUNTRY Week Tennis has returned to the courts of Swan Hill this week.
With plenty of players on hand, action started across 100 courts on Monday, following a dinner and official opening ceremony the night before.
The soccer ground at Ken Harrison Sporting Complex has been turned into a tennis complex, with the club's usual 51 lawn courts virtually doubled in number.
Pat Gilchrist and her Victorian Country Tennis Association team have been coming to Swan Hill to help run the event for about 14 years.
Gilchrist, from Broomfield, near Ballarat, said the opening night, held at the tennis club and first morning of Country Week were "nothing short of sensational".
"Everyone had a very enjoyable time and were catching up after not having seen each other for 12 months, in most cases," she said.
"Swan Hill Lawn Tennis club should be more than satisfied."
Nearly 200 teams of four men or four women have entered Country Week this year, with the format to consist of round robins across different grades of competition.
Grand finals will be played on Friday morning.
Gilchrist said the event had enjoyed a positive start.
"It got off without a hitch this morning," she said.
Among the notable Country Week achievements was A grade's Tandara Girls, a Bendigo team, that was shooting for its sixth straight title.
Gilchrist said the week was suitable for all ages and abilities.
"There's a range in standard, from A grade to C grade 6.
The competition lends itself to all ages and abilities," she said.
Meanwhile, 14-year-old Lachlan Carroll was enjoying his first Country Week at home when he spoke to The Guardian on Monday.
His team, including father Max Carroll, Trevor Holt, Neil Williams, Barry Dow, Darren Devereux, Ian Grey and Stewie McGregor, had won both its Monday ties, four rubbers to nil.
Carroll joked the week's holiday early in term one was the event's real sweetener.
"I love it, getting off school is good," he laughed.
The B special 2 team was likely to face sterner opposition yesterday, Carroll said.
"We should have a couple of harder teams," he said.
In two matches with his dad, Carroll had triumphed 8-0, 8-3 and 8-4, 8-5.
"So far our team has done well overall."
Finals on Friday will be tough (to qualify for) but we'll see how we go," he said.
