MURRAY Downs golfers Jan Butcher and Sheila Oxley are the champions of the Murray Valley after the final round of the event at Murray Downs on Saturday.
This was the inaugural staging of this annual event which was made up of competitors from Albury, Yarrawonga, Cobram/Barooga, Tocumwal, Rich River and Barham clubs.
Qualifying events are held at each club with the winners then competing for the title at a different venue each year.
The team from Rich River won the men's event with Joe Morrison and Col Lawry representing the home club coming a creditable third with 37 points.
The winning score from Jan and Sheila was 41 points from the Cobram Barooga team with 40 points.
Ninety-one players took out cards in Saturday's stroke event.
In A grade, consistent eight-marker, Barry Lacey returned a nett score of 70 to win on a countback from six-marker Riley Head.
Riley is one of the very promising junior golfers at Murray Downs and has spent much of the school holidays on the course.
In B grade, Vince Foott (12) 68 nett won from Tony Ford (14) 69 and the C grade trophies went to Ardy Merrett (19) 70 on a count back from Robert West (17).
Andrew Scott (25) was the successful D grader with a score of 68.
Runner-up was Rich River visitor John Goodley (20) 70.
Sheila Beard (23) 72 won the ladies event from trainee professional and pro shop assistant Sienna Lambert 72 nett.
Sienna now plays off a handicap of +1.
Par was Sunday's competition with Craig Simpson (10) three-up and Norma Everett (26) two-up taking out the winner's vouchers.
Trent Hawkins (20) one-up and Sienna Lambert (+1) two-down were runners-up.
Another junior golfer, Daniel Delmenico has whiled away many hours of the school holidays on the course and came to the fore in Thursday's par event with a score of three-up from his four handicap.
Runner-up in A grade was Chris Hodgson (8) one-up.
