Major upsets

06 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
SWAN Hill's tennis pennant was turned upside down on Saturday, when the two bottom teams scored powerful victories over much more fancied sides.

McCrae out-pointed McCallum in all departments on its way to a 17 game win, while Gray was even more emphatic as it defeated Splatt by 23 games.

While these wins won't put McCrae and Gray anywhere close to getting into the four, it will certainly send the message to all the other sides to be wary of a late surge from this lowly ranked pair of teams.

In spite of the heroics from the bottom of the ladder, the most influential match was played between Beveridge and Curlewis, both of whom still harbour ideas about a top-two finish.

Only 16 games separated the sides, with Beveridge claiming victory.

However Curlewis was a clear leader on sets won, with 13 in the bag to Beveridge's 10.

Beveridge set up its win in the women's sets, where it gained a 19 game break.

Vicki Nalder won her two sets in strong fashion, and backed up with a third win in the mixed, while Colleen Grant was also a great contributor, and Millie Saville and Melanie Cunning chipped in with some good work.

Kathy Wright was a clear leader for Curlewis, and Ellen Roberts also did well.

Curlewis won nine of the 11 men's sets, but most of the results were so close that it only gained a 12 game break.

Neil Selleck and Derek MacFarlane were outstanding in their set for Beveridge, with an 8-1 result, and MacFarlane was a collaborator with Vaughn Catton in Beveridge's second set win for the day.
