SWAN Hill's Burke and Wills celebrations have been "the best".
That's the word from Royal Society of Victoria vice-president Peter Thorne, who was in Swan Hill on the weekend for two dinners, science forums, a parade and a walkathon.
Celebrations have taken place along the Burke and Wills expedition trail -- from Melbourne through to Swan Hill -- to mark the 150th anniversary of the ill-fated trek.
Events have also taken place across the globe -- in Ireland, England and Germany.
Mr Thorne -- who is also the chairman of the anniversary commemoration committee -- said Swan Hill's celebrations had been the most extensive that he was aware of.
"I think the whole Swan Hill event has been absolutely outstanding," he told The Guardian.
"Everyone seems to have thrown themselves into it including the council, the genes (Swan Hill Genealogical and Historical Society) and the schools," he said.
"I've been to quite a few of these commemorations and Swan Hill's has been the best."
Swan Hill's celebrations included science forums, a Burke and Wills film screening, dinners, a walkathon, music and poetry readings.
A parade in the CBD on Saturday was also popular, with a large crowd lining Campbell Street to watch camels, horses and historic vehicles.
Exhibitions at the Swan Hill Regional Art Gallery and the Swan Hill Regional Library continue.
