TWO young doctors have started their medical careers at Swan Hill District Health, after joining the hospital at the start of last week.
Doctors Ajai Verma and Emma Leitinger are recent university graduates from Melbourne, and say they have enjoyed life in Swan Hill so far.
Dr Verma will work in the emergency ward while Dr Leitinger will spend her time in the general surgery ward.
"It's a tight-knit environment and people make the most of the available resources. It's very team-oriented," Dr Verma said of the hospital.
Dr Leitinger said they had been "shown the ropes" since they began their internship last monday.
"We're getting a more hands-on experience and we're probably going to get a lot more opportunities than we would have in the city," she said.
Under a permanent arrangement with the Post Graduate Medical Council of Victoria, Swan Hill District Health acquired the services of the doctors to provide placements in emergency medicine and general surgery.
Dr Verma and Dr Leitinger will stay in Swan Hill for 10 weeks before they go to St Vincent's Hospital in Melbourne.
Once they leave, a new set of interns will come up to Swan Hill.
Swan Hill District Health medical administrator Dr John Christie said the benefit of the rotations provided clinical training for young doctors and also assisted with the patient workload at the hospital.
"Another and very important benefit is exposing young metropolitan doctors to the country. Hopefully after their completion of training, some may wish to return," Dr Christie said.
