Home invasion arrests

23 Jan, 2012 08:47 AM
SWAN Hill police have arrested two of the people accused of carrying out a violent home invasion in the New South Wales town of Finley on Tuesday morning.

Police were called to the Pioneer Station Motel on Thursday afternoon after receiving a tip-off that two of the alleged offenders were staying at the motel.

Swan Hill Criminal Investigation Unit Detective Sergeant Steve Mitchell said a 26-year-old Kerang woman and a 46-year-old man were arrested.

About eight police were involved in the arrest operation, and Det Sgt Mitchell said it went "relatively smoothly".

The arrested duo are accused of breaking into the Finley home with two others and seriously assaulting a male and female inside.

The female victim was stabbed in the neck and suffered head injuries, while the male victim had severe facial lacerations. Both victims were taken to the Goulburn Valley Hospital in a serious condition.

It is understood that the victims and the accused were known to each other.

Since the alleged Finley assault, the offending group had been on the run and Deniliquin Police said they had committed "numerous offences" in New South Wales and Victoria before their arrest.

A 23-year-old man, also accused of playing a part in the Finley assault, was extradited to New South Wales on Thursday after his arrest in Kerang on Wednesday.

Police are still looking for information regarding a fourth unidentified male who is also believed to have been involved in the Finley assault.

Deniliquin Local Area Command Acting Inspector Miles Rogers thanked the Swan Hill police for their cooperation and said information from the public had led to the arrests.

"We've been assisted by members of the public who have seen our media appeals. Without the valuable information supplied by the community we wouldn't have apprehended these offenders," he said.

"If they hadn't been arrested, it's likely they would have gone on to commit more offences."

The 26-year-old Kerang woman faced the Swan Hill Magistrates' Court on Friday afternoon as Deniliquin police applied to have her extradited to New South Wales.

The woman, who appeared with a shaved head and was dressed in black pants and a black singlet, sat silently throughout the hearing which lasted about 10 minutes.

She did not apply for bail and will be remanded in custody before a hearing at the Deniliquin Local Court tomorrow.

The 46-year-old man arrested by Swan Hill Police on Thursday will remain remanded in Victoria on unrelated matters.

The 23-year-old man who was also extradited to New South Wales, faces charges of aggravated break and enter, reckless wounding and intent to recklessly wound.

He appeared before the Finley Local Court on Friday and his case has been adjourned to Albury on March 19.
