Aussie spirit shines through

27 Jan, 2012 04:00 AM
THERE was no shortage of community spirit and national pride on display at Riverside Park yesterday, as about 2000 people attended Swan Hill's Australia Day celebrations.

An enthusiastic crowd enjoyed the annual breakfast, which also included musical performances, speeches and an award presented to the region's citizen for the year.

Event coordinator Marie Schlemme thanked the host of community groups and volunteers who helped make the event a success, which has now been running for more than 30 years.

"Everything's just terrific," Ms Schlemme said.

"There was a wonderful atmosphere which is really good. It's that acknowledgement of Australia Day that people are proud of and that's why they want to celebrate."

Ms Schlemme praised some new Australians who volunteered at the breakfast.

"There were quite a lot of Sudanese and young Afghanis and it's great that they're happy to participate," she said.

With about 1300 of the crowd eating at the breakfast, organisers had to come well prepared with an abundance of food on offer.

The organisers ordered about 90kg of sausages, 60kg of bacon, 250 litres of orange juice and 1300 bread rolls.

After the official party made an impressive entrance on a 1936 vintage fire truck, the crowd was entertained by the Victoria Police Show Band and a performance by Sudanese group Kout Tok.

The Swan Hill citizen of the year was awarded to Edward Dalton, a resident who has lived in the town since 1979.

Mr Dalton has been a volunteer at St Vincent de Paul for 17 years, and had a decorated career as a Victoria Police officer before his retirement in 1995.

After accepting award in front of a packed crowd, Mr Dalton said he was "lost for words".

"I am extremely humbled by this award...but like most winners the recipient is usually only the face of the organisation (they represent). It's the people behind the face who make the people who receive the award," he said in his speech.

Mr Dalton also thanked the people who nominated him for the citizen of the year and his wife Stella.

The region's young citizen of the year went to Frazer Ginn, a CFA volunteer from Robinvale.

Frazer has been involved in the CFA since 2005 and assisted with the flood recovery in the Mildura area last year. Frazer's achievements were recognised at Robinvale's Australia Day breakfast.

The Tyntynder Football Netball Club was awarded the community event of the year for the Auskick Gala Day held in June.

More than 200 young footballers from around the Mallee attended the event held at Alan Garden Reserve.
