 Anguish over missing son

Anguish over missing son

03 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
UP ON the wall in Sharryn Ficarra's dining room is a cork board filled with an array of family photos.

Among the many items stuck on the board is a picture of her 26-year-old son Nick, proudly holding up a monster Murray Cod with a mischievous look on his face.

This is Ms Ficarra's favourite picture of her son, a young man she describes as "a true country boy" with a passion for fishing, music and farming.

Nick was reported missing nearly three weeks ago.

He had been picking nectarines with his father Mick on the family farm at Castle Donnington on Saturday, January 14 when he failed to return home.

"His father thought he must have gone off with friends, but then by lunchtime we'd realised it was a bit suspicious that he was gone," Ms Ficarra said.

The police and SES were called and they conducted an extensive search around the Little Murray Weir area that afternoon.

They had no luck finding Nick, neither did the specialist police teams who travelled up from Melbourne in the following days to join the search.

Volunteers have spent countless hours looking for clues, and the police air wing, search and rescue team and dog squad all failed to find any traces of evidence.

"Nothing's been found -- no clothing, not even a cigarette butt. There's no footprints on the river bank...nothing," Ms Ficarra said.

"People keep saying, 'why aren't (the police) still searching for him' but you can't just keep looking."

Since Nick's disappearance, there have been incorrect reports that he had been found. Ms Ficarra said she wanted to inform the public that the search was continuing and called for anyone with information to come forward.

"If anybody knows anything, let the police know," Ms Ficarra said.

With no answers as to Nick's whereabouts, his family is holding onto the hope that he may be somewhere else.

The Ficarra family now has the impossible task of trying to get some form of normality in their lives as they wait for answers.

Mr Ficarra has gone back to work on the farm, while some of Nick's siblings have returned to their homes away from the Swan Hill region.

"They have to go on," Ms Ficarra said.

"But I'm not -- I can't. I'm still here waiting."

Nick is described as being of Southern European appearance, 170cm tall, with brown hair and was last seen wearing a white t-shirt, shorts and boots.

Anyone with information should contact the Swan Hill Police Station on 5036 1600 or CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.
